Climate

The Municipality of Sandanski is situated in the South West of Bulgaria.
This situation, together with the specific topography of the region, helps to form the original and unique climate. In it there are features of the continental climate and the nearby Mediterranean climatic district.
It particularly influences the yearly distribution of precipitation and the regime of the temperatures.
The orography also influences the forming of the climate in the region.
With increasing the altitude, the climate becomes mountainous, with clearly expressed vertical zoning.
There are four climatic regions in the Municipality of Sandanski-Sandanski-Petrich climatic region, the Maleshevski-Pirin mountainous climatic region, the Pirin climatic region-the medium mountainous region, the Mountainous climatic region-high mountainous region.

The average yearly temperature in Sandanski (200 m above the sea level) is 13.9 °C, in Popina Laka (1203 m above the sea level) is 7,3 °C.
The relative humidity is the lowest in the country 66 %, the average number of the days with precipitation over 1 mm is only 69-70.
The duration of the period with sunshine in Sandanski is the longest in the country-2506 h.
In connection with the considerable sunshine, the snow during the winter months in the low parts and the parts at the foot of the mountain is rare-4-5 days a year. In the high mountain regions there is snow from November to April-May over 150 days a year. The average height of snow in January is up to 100 cm. Because of amassing in March, it reaches 130-140 cm.
The snow cover is of great importance for forming the river flow in the Municipality.

The foggy days during the year are about five.
The average speed of the wind is 2 m/s.
The average yearly amount of precipitation is 536 mm. for Sandanski, 565 mm., for Melnik, 783 mm. for the Village of Pirin, 835 mm. for Popina Laka.
The distribution of precipitation during the different seasons is influenced by the Mediterranean-a considerable amount of the autumn, winter and spring precipitation, with sudden decrease of the summer precipitation which determines the longer period of drought in the winter and the first half of the autumn.

The climate in the Municipality of Sandanski is characterized by being extremely diverse.
The winter months are characterized with the fact that the average monthly temperatures in the lower parts and those at the foot of the mountain are positive and are almost the same as the temperatures along the south Black Sea parts; that’s why, the precipitation in the winter months is predominantly rain. The spring comes first is this region of the country. In the spring the precipitation is over 127 l/m2.
The whole region has the longest period of sunshine in the summer in the whole country. The average temperature in July is about 25 °C and the days with temperature over 20 °C in July are around 16. The precipitation and the relative humidity of the air in the region of Sandanski are the lowest in the country.
The autumn is comparatively mild. It is characterized with sunny days which continue until the end of November and very often during the whole winter.

The town of Sandanski boasts with the best natural treating of bronchial-asthma in Europe with its favorable climate which is suitable for patients with chronic allergic diseases of the respiratory system. The climatologic treatment in combination with a balneological treatment with mineral water has an incredible potential for tourist development.
The town of Melnik is also very suitable for treating allergic diseases because it is the place in Bulgaria with the lowest contents of allergens in the air. There was a project in the past for building a sanatorium there. The mountain climate in the medium and high-mountain parts of Pirin and Slavyanka is also suitable for recreational and medicinal use.
